When was the last time you read a meaningful story about Indigenous Peoples in your favorite newspaper? Or saw one on the evening news? Or even on your favorite alt media site? Unless Intercontinental Cry is on your reading list, it’s probably been a while. And it’s definitely not because nothing’s happening.
No news is not good news where Indigenous Peoples are concerned. Indigenous struggles have grown from a handful to hundreds in the past decade as pressure has intensified to sell or surrender their territories to extractive industries that are destroying their communities, their livelihoods, and little by little, their very cultures.
Here’s why you should care, even if you’re not Indigenous. Throughout the Americas and the world Indigenous Peoples are fighting OUR battles, protecting the last sacred and pristine places on Earth from the apparently unstoppable destruction of industrial consumerism. And they are risking – and sometimes sacrificing – their lives and their livelihoods to do it. The least we can do is pay attention.
“On any given day, Indigenous communities are physically stopping mining companies from tearing apart biodiversity hotspots, preventing governments from enacting legislation that’s straight out of the 15th century and leading efforts to decommission destructive hydro dams – all the while, fostering a global climate of political transparency and accountability,” says John “Ahni” Schertow, founding editor of Intercontinental Cry.
