The Kalanguya Peoples are an Indigenous group native to the northern Philippines, primarily inhabiting the mountainous areas of the Cordillera region, including Benguet, Nueva Vizcaya, Ifugao, and Pangasinan. Traditionally agriculturalists, the Kalanguya practice sustainable swidden farming and maintain a strong connection to the land through ancestral domain claims. Their society is deeply rooted in kinship, oral tradition, and spiritual practices, including sacred rituals that honor both nature and ancestors, forming the backbone of their cultural identity.
One of the biggest challenges the Kalanguya face is the loss of ancestral lands due to mining, logging, and infrastructure development. Legal recognition of their territories remains inconsistent, which undermines their ability to protect and manage their traditional lands. Additionally, language erosion and cultural assimilation threaten younger generations’ understanding of Kalanguya heritage, as many youth migrate to urban areas for education and employment, distancing them from traditional ways of life.
Despite these challenges, the Kalanguya have shown remarkable resilience through cultural revival efforts. Community leaders and elders actively engage in programs to document and teach the Kalanguya language, folklore, and ecological knowledge. Their advocacy for Indigenous education, along with successful campaigns to gain Certificates of Ancestral Domain Titles (CADTs), showcases their inspiring determination to reclaim their rights and ensure their cultural survival for future generations. This blend of tradition and activism highlights their vital role in Indigenous self-determination in the Philippines.
