Winnipeg, MB – The volunteer-run investigative journalism org Intercontinental Cry (IC) today launched a new online campaign that asks the international community to help them secure the dedicated ad-free global indigenous rights news platform.
Founded by Winnipeg-based journalist and editor-in-chief John Schertow, IC has spent more than a decade covering the social, political, cultural and environmental justice-related challenges that Indigenous Peoples face in dozens of countries.
“As the world’s only indigenous rights investigative journalism platform, I’m very proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish over the past twelve years; but we can no longer support ourselves as a volunteer-run organization,” explains Schertow. “With no foundations or sponsors to back us we are unable to hire critically-need staff or support any of our journalists. Our only option is to turn to the world.”
With the help of the monthly-giving crowd funder Patreon, Intercontinental Cry is doing just that.
“We decided to turn to Patreon because an investigative journalism platform like IC should remain ad-free and editorially independent. We also want to do something more than raise money. We want to partner with our readers to make sure that all Indigenous Peoples have a permanent platform that respects indigenous rights as much as it encourages good journalism. The platform is in place. Now we just need some good people to stand with us.”
A publication of the Center for World Indigenous Studies since 2014, IC has excelled as an independent service offering what has essentially become its own genre of fact-based news and analysis. In recent months, the organization has developed a series of special projects including an online indigenous journalism training course, a checklist to encourage culturally-responsible journalism in Canada and an online culture and language sharing project for indigenous youth.
“We have a lot of amazing projects that we’re eager to get started on. But before we can get to all that, we need our readers to come together so that we can continue to provide the coverage that tens of thousands of people depend on.”
