WINNIPEG, MB — In a renewed effort to strengthen intercontinental indigenous politics and connections between the Global North and the Global South, Intercontinental Cry is proud to announce the relaunch of its Spanish edition, IC en Español.
“We’re very excited to be able to serve the Spanish speaking community once again,” comments IC founding editor John Ahni Schertow. “We all know that international news coverage of Indigenous Peoples is incredibly restricted in the Global North, but the problem’s even worse in the South. We almost never see reports in Spanish about the challenges that Indigenous Peoples face outside of Latin America”, he continues.
“We want to help bridge this gap in honour of the powerful indigenous media movement that’s growing south of the US/Mexico border, not to mention the transnational indigenous rights movement that’s gained incredible momentum during the last decade.”
The idea for the re-launch came after IC’s Mexico-based Editor, Tracy Barnett, tried – without much success – to find some articles in Spanish about the ongoing battle against the Dakota Access Pipeline in North Dakota.
“I started putting feelers out and before I knew it, I had a team of nine translators signed up,” says Barnett. “It seems the issue really resonates with a lot of people, and I am thrilled to see this all coming together in such an organic and spontaneous way… it’s a validation for the work we’ve been doing and a sign that the tide is shifting.”
“The timing for this couldn’t have been better,” adds Schertow.
Just a couple days after Tracy shared the good news, one of IC’s newest editors, Manuela Picq, found someone to take the reins: Spanish Editor Victoria Maillo.
“We’re thrilled to welcome Victoria Maillo to the board. Under her leadership and with this new team of translators IC/E will go far. And with the new Spanish site already online, we’re going to focus on translating the essentials,” Schertow continues. “However, IC en Español won’t be limited to translated articles from the main website. We also want to publish original investigative journalism in Spanish and help bring important stories in Spanish to the English-speaking community.”
To that end, Manuela Picq will be attending the III Continental Summit of Indigenous Communication of Abya Yala, in Cochabamba, Bolivia, Nov. 14th-18th.
“Manuela’s main goal is to cover this hemispheric conference, but she’ll also be on the lookout for partners to help us bridge the indigenous media gap,” explains Schertow. “We need to make sure that our voices can be heard, no matter what languages those voices come in… for the mutual benefit of the North and the South.”
