Tech Rooted in the Land: Indigenous Approaches to Clean Water

Indigenous communities have long used natural and sustainable methods to purify and manage water. Many of these techniques have been adapted and modernized in the form of commercial water filters; but their origins lie in ancestral ecological knowledge that emphasized balance, respect, and long-term sustainability. Let’s take a look at ten of these water filtration methods.

1. Clay Pot Filtration

Clay pots have long been used by Indigenous communities in Latin America, Africa, and Asia to store and purify water. These unglazed pots allow water to seep through tiny pores, trapping dirt and microbes along the way. When infused with silver or pine resin, as done in the Navajo Nation, they can also reduce bacteria.

The simplicity of this method makes it widely accessible. It doesn’t rely on plastic or complex systems, just clay and time-tested knowledge.

2. Biochar Filtration

Biochar is charcoal made from plant waste like corn stalks or coconut shells. It has been used by Indigenous farmers in Southeast Asia and the Amazon to enrich soil, but it also works as a water filter. Its porous structure traps heavy metals, organic pollutants, and bacteria.

Some Indigenous communities now repurpose biochar to make simple filters. When placed in layered systems with sand and gravel, it creates a gravity-fed purification system. It’s low-cost, renewable, and draws on traditional methods of charcoal production.

3. Solar-Powered Filtration

In areas where water and electricity are scarce, solar-powered filters offer a lifeline. The Navajo Nation, where many families live off-grid, has begun using nanofiltration systems powered by the sun. These systems remove uranium and arsenic—common in the groundwater due to mining and natural geology.

Developed in part by Diné engineers, these systems are mobile and designed to meet local needs. They reflect a blend of innovation and tradition, using solar energy.

4. Phytoremediation Using Native Plants

Phytoremediation uses certain plants to clean contaminated water. Indigenous communities in Canada are using this approach to remove pollutants from water near industrial sites. Willows, cattails, and poplars are especially effective in absorbing heavy metals and excess nutrients.

This method draws on ancestral knowledge of native plants and their ecological roles. It’s also low-cost and scalable, especially in rural areas. As these plants grow, they not only clean water but also restore local ecosystems.

5. Wetland Filtration by Māori Communities

The Māori of Aotearoa have long used wetlands, or repo, to manage water quality. These areas are rich in native plants and microbial life that filter runoff and trap sediment. They also hold cultural and spiritual significance.

Today, constructed wetlands based on traditional practices are used to treat wastewater and stormwater. These projects combine engineering with whakapapa (genealogy) and knowledge systems (mātauranga Māori).

6. Rainwater Harvesting

Oil contamination is one reason why Indigenous Peoples like the Kofan, Siona, Secoya, and Waorani are installing rainwater catchment systems. These include rooftop collection tanks and filtration barrels that are locally built and maintained, often with the help of NGOs. These relatively low-cost systems provide clean water without relying on polluted sources, and they reinforce sovereignty by keeping control of water in the community’s hands.

7. Hopi Water Conservation

In the dry Southwest, the Hopi have developed techniques to conserve water for farming and daily life. These include stone terraces, planting in natural catchments, and employing strict protocols around water use.

The problem of access to clean water was highlighted during COVID, when access to clean running water became an even greater problem.

8. Solar-powered filtered water

In Mexico’s Calakmul Biosphere Reserve, Indigenous Maya communities face severe droughts and contaminated water sources. To combat this, Infinitum Humanitarian Systems deployed the Water Aid and Renewable Power (WARP) system which uses solar-power to provide filtered water using a shipping container. There are many other such projects in Pakistan, Australia, Kiribati and elsewhere.

9. Coconut holes and clam shells

Some Indigenous communities in the Pacific, such as those in Kiribati and Tuvalu, have used crushed coral and shell sand to filter drinking water. These materials naturally filter contaminants and balance pH levels, particularly when rainwater is the main source of fresh water.

Modern adaptations of this system use layers of crushed shell, fine sand, and charcoal. These systems are compact, require minimal maintenance, and align with traditional practices of using marine materials for everyday needs. They are especially important as sea-level rise threatens freshwater access. In other parts of the world, Bamboo and Sago Palm is used in similar fashion.

10. Plant Xylem Filtration

While not an indigenous innovation per se, scientists at have MIT developed a simple filtration system using xylem, which is the porous tissue found in tree branches, to remove bacteria from water. This idea builds on nature’s design, where xylem transports water within plants while filtering out impurities. A section of pine wood, for example, can be fitted into a pipe to act as a biological filter. Water passed through the xylem becomes significantly cleaner, removing more than 99% of E. coli in lab tests. It is surely a method that can be used to help indigenous communities who have limited access to clean water.

Flowing Like Water

These are just a few of the methods Indigenous Peoples use to purify and manage water. These approaches offer vital lessons for addressing water scarcity and pollution in ways that honor both people and place.

Unfortunately, many Indigenous territories around the world still struggle to access clean water. Drought, war, industrial development, and government neglect continue to threaten water quality and availability. Some communities must travel long distances to collect water. Others rely on contaminated sources, which places their health and lives at risk. In Canada, many reserves still rely on imports.

The consequences are not only environmental but also social and cultural, as water insecurity disrupts food systems, ceremony, and kinship with the land.

To move toward a more just and sustainable future, Indigenous communities need to be supported. National policy also must shift to respect Indigenous jurisdiction over water and lands. And it is essential that Indigenous communities are supported with infrastructure and funding.

It’s not just a technical challenge. When you boil it down, it is also a question of justice.
