The Houma: Keepers of Louisiana’s Coastal Heritage

The Houma Peoples are an Indigenous group primarily residing in the coastal wetlands of southern Louisiana. Descended from the historic Muskogean-speaking Houma tribe, they are known today as the United Houma Nation, a state-recognized tribe with over 17,000 members. Traditionally, the Houma have sustained themselves through fishing, trapping, and subsistence agriculture, deeply connected to the Mississippi River Delta’s ecosystems. Despite centuries of displacement and cultural suppression, they have preserved a vibrant community rooted in their ancestral lands and traditions.

Environmental Injustice and the Fight for Federal Recognition

The Houma face ongoing challenges from environmental degradation, land loss, and political marginalization. Coastal erosion and rising sea levels—exacerbated by climate change and industrial activities such as oil drilling—have devastated Houma territory, displacing families and threatening traditional lifeways. Additionally, the United States government has yet to grant them federal recognition, which limits access to healthcare, education, and disaster relief services. These compounded challenges have made recovery from hurricanes like Katrina and Ida especially difficult for Houma communities.

Cultural Resilience and Environmental Stewardship

What’s truly inspiring about the Houma is their resilient spirit and leadership in climate justice. They have become vocal advocates for environmental protection, working to restore wetlands and defend Indigenous land rights. Cultural revival efforts—including language revitalization, traditional crafts, and youth education programs—are strengthening identity and intergenerational knowledge. The Houma’s adaptability and fierce advocacy not only safeguard their future but also serve as a powerful example of Indigenous leadership in the face of environmental and political adversity.
