The Ingarikó Peoples, also known as the Akawaio, are an Indigenous community primarily residing in the highland regions of Guyana, Venezuela, and northern Brazil. Part of the larger Carib-speaking peoples, they are closely tied to the landscapes of the Pakaraima Mountains and maintain a spiritual and cultural connection to sacred sites such as Mount Roraima. The Ingarikó rely on traditional practices like subsistence farming, hunting, and fishing, and their culture emphasizes harmonious living with nature and deep respect for ancestral lands.
The Ingarikó Peoples face serious challenges including land encroachment, illegal mining, and lack of recognition of their territorial rights. Despite these challenges, the Ingarikó Peoples have remained committed to preserving their land, language, and customs. They have taken significant steps toward asserting their rights, including engaging in legal and political advocacy to defend their territories. Their traditional ecological knowledge has contributed to biodiversity conservation efforts in the Guiana Shield, one of the most intact rainforest ecosystems on Earth.
