The Bonda Peoples: Guardians of Odisha’s Hill Culture

The Bonda people, also known as the Remo, are one of the most ancient and isolated Indigenous tribes in India, residing primarily in the remote hills of the Malkangiri district in the state of Odisha. Belonging to the Austroasiatic language family, the Bondas are known for their distinct language, traditional attire, and matriarchal social structure. Women often play central roles in family and community life, and are recognized by their unique style of dress—colorful beads, metal jewelry, and shaved heads covered with headscarves. The Bonda culture is deeply intertwined with nature, spirituality, and ancestral customs.

Challenges Facing the Bonda Community Today

The Bonda people face a range of critical challenges that threaten their cultural survival and overall well-being. Encroachment by mainstream society, deforestation, and lack of access to education and healthcare have contributed to widespread marginalization. Development projects and forced integration policies have also disrupted their traditional lifestyle, often resulting in loss of land and displacement. High rates of poverty, malnutrition, and limited infrastructure in their hilly region exacerbate these issues, making the Bonda community particularly vulnerable to exploitation and social exclusion.

Inspiring Aspects of the Bonda People

Despite centuries of isolation and modern pressures, the Bonda people have shown remarkable resilience in preserving their cultural identity and traditional knowledge. Recent grassroots efforts by local leaders, NGOs, and Indigenous advocates are helping to revitalize Bonda language, education, and health initiatives that respect cultural values. The Bondas’ continued commitment to ecological stewardship, social cohesion, and gender equity within their community serves as an inspiring example of Indigenous resistance and adaptability in the face of systemic challenges.
