The Huu-ay-aht Peoples are a self-governing First Nation of the Nuu-chah-nulth peoples, located on the west coast of Vancouver Island in British Columbia, Canada. With deep-rooted connections to the land and sea, the Huu-ay-aht have long practiced sustainable fishing, forestry, and cultural traditions rooted in respect for nature and community. Their ancestral territory includes pristine beaches, ancient forests, and vital marine ecosystems. In 2011, the Huu-ay-aht became one of the first Nations in British Columbia to implement a modern treaty, gaining legal recognition of their right to self-government and territorial control.
Despite their progress, the Huu-ay-aht have faced significant challenges stemming from colonial policies, residential school trauma, and economic hardship. They are actively revitalizing their language, culture, and community leadership, with youth engagement at the core of their strategies. Through initiatives like the “Path to Healing” program and investments in education, economic development, and cultural resurgence, the Huu-ay-aht are building a resilient future rooted in ancestral wisdom.
