The Kamentsá Peoples, also known as Camsá or Kamentšá, are an Indigenous group native to the Sibundoy Valley in the Putumayo region of southern Colombia. They speak the Kamentsá language, which is an isolate, meaning it is unrelated to any known language family. Renowned for their vibrant textiles, music, and spiritual ceremonies, the Kamentsá maintain a strong connection to their ancestral territory and worldview. Their culture is deeply rooted in traditional ecological knowledge, spiritual plant medicine (including the use of yagé or ayahuasca), and rituals honoring the land and cosmos.
The Kamentsá face significant challenges from extractive industries, land encroachment, and governmental indifference. Oil drilling, mining, and road construction in and around their territory threaten the ecological integrity of the Sibundoy Valley and displace communities. Moreover, cultural marginalization and limited access to culturally relevant education have placed their language and traditions at risk. Despite Colombia’s constitutional recognition of Indigenous rights, implementation remains inconsistent, leaving the Kamentsá vulnerable to systemic inequalities.
