The Lekwungen are the Indigenous stewards of what is now known as Victoria, British Columbia, and surrounding areas on Vancouver Island. Their traditional territory encompasses the southern part of the island, including key locations such as Esquimalt and Songhees. The term “Lekwungen” refers both to the language and cultural identity shared among those who belong to this distinct heritage. Today, the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations are recognized as living descendants of the Lekwungen, upholding their ancestral ties and cultural responsibilities to the land and waters of the Salish Sea.
Despite the resilience and vitality of Lekwungen traditions, colonial systems have imposed severe disruptions, including forced displacement, residential schools, and land dispossession. These injustices have had lasting impacts on health, education, housing, and access to traditional lands. Urban development in Greater Victoria continues to threaten sacred sites and limit the exercise of cultural practices. Moreover, systemic inequalities and jurisdictional barriers often restrict their sovereignty in decisions affecting their territory and community well-being.
Amid these challenges, Lekwungen voices are leading a powerful cultural resurgence. Language revitalization efforts, land-based learning programs, and public art—such as the welcome figures and carvings around Victoria’s Inner Harbour—are raising awareness and reaffirming presence. The Songhees and Esquimalt Nations are actively reclaiming authority over governance, environmental stewardship, and economic development. Their leadership in treaty negotiations, community health initiatives, and educational partnerships offers an inspiring model of Indigenous self-determination grounded in cultural strength and historical continuity.
