The Mandaya are an Indigenous nation residing predominantly in the mountainous regions of Davao Oriental and parts of Compostela Valley in Mindanao, Philippines. Their name translates to “first people upstream,” reflecting their ancestral settlements along river headwaters. Renowned for their intricate dagmay textiles—handwoven fabrics featuring symbolic patterns—and rich oral traditions, the Mandaya maintain a deep connection to their land, culture, and spiritual practices. Their communities are characterized by strong leadership structures and a commitment to preserving their unique identity amidst external influences.
Mandaya communities face significant challenges, including armed conflict, land dispossession, and cultural assimilation. Incidents such as the 2016 assassination of tribal chief Copertino Banugan by insurgent forces have disrupted traditional leadership and threatened community cohesion. Additionally, encroachment by external entities and development projects have led to displacement and loss of ancestral lands. The younger generation’s exposure to mainstream culture and education systems further exacerbates the erosion of traditional practices and language.
Despite these adversities, the Mandaya demonstrate remarkable resilience through cultural revitalization and environmental conservation efforts. Initiatives like the Kalindugan Festival celebrate their rich heritage, fostering unity and pride among community members. Notably, individuals like Nenen Cervantes, the only female forest guard in Davao Oriental, exemplify the Mandaya’s commitment to protecting their ancestral domains. Furthermore, the recognition of Mandaya weaver Samporonia Madanlo as a National Living Treasure underscores the community’s dedication to preserving traditional arts.
