The Ogoni are an Indigenous nation residing in the oil-rich Niger Delta region of southern Nigeria. With a history rooted in farming, fishing, and rich cultural traditions, the Ogoni maintain a deep spiritual and practical connection to their land and waterways. Their identity is interwoven with the lush but fragile ecosystems of the Delta, and their language, festivals, and governance reflect centuries of Indigenous resilience and community stewardship.
For decades, the Ogoni have suffered the devastating impacts of unchecked oil extraction on their ancestral lands. Massive pollution, frequent oil spills, and gas flaring by multinational corporations have poisoned water sources, destroyed farmland, and decimated local livelihoods. Attempts to protest these injustices have often been met with state-sanctioned violence, most notably the execution of writer and activist Ken Saro-Wiwa and eight others in 1995. To this day, land contamination, corporate impunity, and political marginalization continue to threaten Ogoni survival.

The Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP) became a global symbol of environmental justice and Indigenous rights, mobilizing communities and drawing international attention to extractive injustice. Today, Ogoni youth, artists, and environmental advocates continue to build on this legacy—reviving language, defending land rights, and pushing for ecological restoration. Their story stands as a testament to the power of grassroots resistance and the unbreakable bond between land and identity.
