The Tobique First Nation, or Neqotkuk, is a Wolastoqiyik (Maliseet) nation located along the Tobique River in western New Brunswick. This riverine nation is part of the Wabanaki Confederacy and holds deep spiritual and cultural ties to the land and waters of the Wolastoq (Saint John River) watershed. The Tobique community maintains a rich heritage of language, traditional medicine, basketry, and seasonal practices, all rooted in a worldview of reciprocity, respect, and sustainability that has guided life for thousands of years.
Over generations, the Tobique Nation has endured a series of systemic challenges, including land loss, broken treaties, and environmental exploitation. The construction of hydroelectric dams on the Tobique and Saint John Rivers flooded sacred sites and traditional territories, disrupting fisheries and livelihoods without proper consultation or compensation. Persistent issues such as contaminated water, underfunded infrastructure, and lack of economic opportunity continue to affect daily life. These struggles are compounded by intergenerational trauma linked to residential schools and state-led assimilation policies.
Amid these challenges, the Tobique Nation has emerged as a powerful force in environmental justice and cultural revitalization. Community-led efforts to restore river ecosystems, challenge colonial energy projects, and reclaim traditional knowledge reflect a profound commitment to healing both land and identity. Youth programs focused on Wolastoqey language learning and land-based education are fostering pride and resilience in new generations.
