On May 8, outgoing United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, Richard Falk, appealed to civil society “to join the growing global solidarity movement to resist the prolonged Israeli occupation and creeping annexation of Palestine.”
On May 21, The Palestinian BDS National Committee (BNC), the largest coalition in Palestinian civil society that is leading the global Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions movement for Palestinian rights, called for a boycott of the Soros Fund Management and the Open Society Foundations due to the recently announced first-quarter 2014 investment by Soros in SodaStream stock and increased investment in Teva Pharmaceuticals, “both Israeli companies that are deeply involved in violations of international law.”
On May 29, as the result of worldwide pressure, the Gates Foundation sold down its shares in the world’s largest private military and security company, G4S–a company “highly complicit in the Israeli military occupation of Palestine and particularly complicit in the imprisonment of the over 5,000 Palestinian political prisoners.”
Across the world right now, Indigenous peoples are facing a renewed assault on their lands, rights, and ways of life.
From extractive industries pushing deeper into ancestral territories, to governments rolling back hard-won protections,
the threat is global—and it is growing.
What makes this moment especially dangerous is how little attention it receives.
Stories like this are disappearing in real time. Mainstream media
barely covers it and the coverage is fragmented. The public is left without the context
needed to understand what is truly at stake.
