As reported in Cultural Survival, the President of Guatemala — former military general Otto Perez Molina — has declared martial law against Maya communities opposing a dam development by a Spanish company on their river. With the state of siege authorized by President Molina, hundreds of federal police and army tanks have invaded the communities to quell Mayan protests after the murder of one of their leaders by private security forces.
Across the world right now, Indigenous peoples are facing a renewed assault on their lands, rights, and ways of life.
From extractive industries pushing deeper into ancestral territories, to governments rolling back hard-won protections,
the threat is global—and it is growing.
